Curriculum Projects

Our curriculum support is focused on integrating outdoor learning through enhanced projects. This involves planning with staff, shared teaching and the delivery of exciting lessons.

Link Planning

Our first step is to work with class teachers to create ‘link planning’ mind maps. These plans help to identify areas of the curriculum that can be enhanced through outdoor learning. This can relieve the pressure of a packed curriculum, as we can deliver subject content while teaching a range of outdoor skills.

Session Plans

Once the link planning is in place, the next step is to organise the sessions. These will be delivered by a member of our staff alongside the class teacher. This way staff can be up-skilled and content covered in the outdoor session can be consolidated in the classroom. All of our staff have qualified teacher status and have at least 14 years of classroom experience. This means you can trust us to deliver high-quality sessions with a sound understanding of the subjects linked to them.
Your school will build up a set of year-group-specific outdoor curriculum project plans. Each one will be bespoke and take into consideration your drivers and unique community setup. Teachers will feel more confident in delivering outdoor sessions and the children will have the opportunity to reconnect with nature, supporting their well-being as well as improving their educational offer.

We prefer to work with schools over a long period. We have been working with some of our regular schools for over four years. Therefore, we try to keep our pricing for yearly commitments as low as possible.
As a rough guide, one Sylvan Lore Leader will cost £150 per half day and £250 for a full day.
This low price is reserved for schools that work with us on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

PPA Cover

Covering PPA with Sylvan Lore is a cost-effective way to boost your provision and extend your outdoor offer. As our Sylvan Lore leaders are also QTS experienced teachers, delivering these sessions, alongside a Teaching Assistant, can free up staff for their PPA time. Although this model doesn’t have quite the same ‘whole school’ impact as our curriculum support package, leaders will still ensure that there are links between the outdoor sessions and the curriculum areas being covered. Schools we currently support using this model have reported that the teaching assistants can often help teachers consolidate sessions in class and that the up-skilling of TAs has benefited the delivery of outdoor sessions in other areas of the curriculum.
We can cover up to four classes in one day, using two Sylvan Lore leaders and this would cost £450. Covering two classes with one leader would be £250. This price includes all resources, tools, and consumables. Your leader is also guaranteed to be a fully qualified teacher.

Adventure Days

Our adventure days are a great alternative to an expensive trip. We bring the adventure to you. Our two most popular days are the ‘Survival Day,’ and our ‘Stone Age Experience.’ We can tailor days around many history, science, and geography topics, so do get in touch if you want a bespoke experience.

Survival Day

This day is scenario-based. Finding themselves stranded in the outdoors after their plane has crash-landed, the children need to work in teams to overcome the weather, thirst, and hunger to survive the day.
They will…
  • Search for resources scattered from the plane
  • Learn how to erect a shelter to keep warm and dry
  • Develop fire-lighting skills
  • Make water safe to drink through filtration and purification
  • Forage for edible plants
  • Learn how to shoot a bow and hit a target (depending on your school site)*
  • Cook on a fire

Our survival days are subject to a site visit and risk assessment carried out by one of our Sylvan Lore leaders. Archery will be swapped out for spear-throwing if it is not possible to set up a safe archery range (Sylvan Lore leaders are also trained Archery GB instructors).

Stone Age Experience

This is our most popular history day. During our visit, your children will…
  • Learn how to put up a temporary shelter
  • Explore wattle and daub construction through miniature roundhouse building
  • Use flint tools to create wooden spears
  • Have a go at stone knapping
  • Use plant fibers to make a fishing line
  • Forage for food and resources
Our adventure days start at £520. This includes two Sylvan Lore leaders and all consumables used during the sessions. We can accommodate one class for a whole day or two classes for half a day each. Multiple-day bookings allow us to offer significant discounts.
